Acid-etched glass, also known as satin etched glass,frosted glass and smoked glass, is a popular decorative glass that provides a smooth and classic look in a variety of finishes. This type of glass maintains its frosted look and finish over time and is easy to maintain. Our selection of patterns varies in light transmission, design, styles, and privacy levels. Frosted glass is very similar, but produced instead through physical treatment of material blasting, typically with sand, to achieve a similar look to acid-etched glass. Both acid-etched and frosted finishes produce varying levels of obscurity, while still allowing in natural light from outside, or from room to room.
The process of etching the surface of glass with hydrofluoric acid. Acid-etched decoration is produced by covering the glass with an acid-resistant substance such as ink or wax, through which the design is scratched. The object is then immersed in hydrofluoric acid, or a mixture of dilute hydrofluoric acid and potassium fluoride is applied to etch the exposed areas of glass.
To manufacture this type of glass, annealed glass is treated with hydrofluoric acid to give the surface a satin frosted appearance. Different applications of the acidic treatment can create many different patterns and visual properties. Acid-etched glass applications vary widely including shower doors, office doors and windows, kitchen and etched glass windows, etched glass doors, decorative glass walls, and satin glass furniture.
